Dr. Tawana Mattox

Tawana Mattox, Ed.D., affectionately known as “Dr. T” is an Athens, GA. native who matriculated through the Clarke County School District.  She is an engaged community activist, advocate and educator.   Dr. T is employed with Athens Land Trust as the Director of Education and Empowerment. In this role, she serves as the Principal Investigator for several grants to expand community-informed sustainability and renewable energy solutions to underserved communities of color in Athens-Clarke County.  Dr. T is also the co-founder and President of Destined Inc., a 25 year old youth development organization that helps students improve their reading skills, increase their social emotional awareness, and equip them for life skills so that they will become productive adults.

Dr. T is a member of the Pittard Road Environmental Justice Stakeholder group .  She previously served as Vice President of the Clarke County School Board,  She is currently engaged in the school system as the co-chair of the Classic City High School Local School Governance Team (LSTG), and she is a member of the Clarke County School District Sustainability committee. Dr. T is the President of the Athens Area Morris Brown College Alumni Association.  She is an active member of New Grove Baptist Church where she is a member of the Women’s ministry, Choir, and Children’s Church.   Dr. Mattox is a 1987 graduate of Cedar Shoals High School.  She completed higher education from Morris Brown College, GA. State University, and Nova Southeastern University. Dr. T values the modeling of her parents, Joseph and Louise Smith. Her greatest accomplishments are mirrored by the success of anyone she has helped along the way.
